ABA Therapy Cost in NJ and Missouri: Insurance, Medicaid, and What Families Actually Pay

  • April 5, 2026
  • Josh

Cost is one of the first questions many families ask when they begin exploring ABA therapy. It makes sense. ABA therapy is an intensive service, and families need to understand what they will be responsible for financially before they commit to a program. The good news is that both New Jersey and Missouri have insurance laws that require coverage for ABA therapy, and Medicaid covers services for eligible children in both states. In most cases, families pay far less than they expect.

What Does ABA Therapy Actually Cost?

The base cost of ABA therapy varies depending on the provider and the intensity of services, but it is often quoted at rates ranging from around $100 to $250 per hour without insurance. For children receiving 20 to 40 hours of therapy per week, which is common for young children with significant support needs, the out-of-pocket cost without insurance could be substantial. However, this number is rarely what families actually pay.

Because both New Jersey and Missouri require most insurance plans to cover ABA therapy, the majority of families access services through their health insurance, Medicaid, or a combination of both. Your actual out-of-pocket cost depends on your specific plan and what stage of your deductible you are at.

ABA Therapy Insurance Coverage in New Jersey

New Jersey has some of the strongest autism insurance mandates in the country. State law requires most commercial insurance plans to cover ABA therapy as a medically necessary treatment for autism spectrum disorder. This applies to fully insured plans regulated by the state, which covers the majority of employer-sponsored plans and individual plans purchased in New Jersey.

Under most New Jersey insurance plans, ABA therapy is covered in the same way other medically necessary services are covered. You may be responsible for a copay or coinsurance after meeting your deductible, but the core cost of therapy is covered by your insurer. Some families pay very little out of pocket, particularly after meeting their annual deductible early in the year.

It is worth noting that self-funded plans, which are employer-sponsored plans that fall under federal ERISA law rather than state regulation, may not be subject to New Jersey’s autism insurance mandate. If you are unsure which type of plan you have, your ABA provider can help you determine coverage during the insurance verification process.

ABA Therapy Insurance Coverage in Missouri

Missouri also requires insurance coverage for ABA therapy under state autism insurance law. Most commercial insurance plans in Missouri are required to cover ABA services for children diagnosed with autism, though the specific terms vary by plan. As with New Jersey, self-funded employer plans may not be subject to Missouri’s state mandate.

Families in Missouri should confirm their specific coverage when they first contact an ABA provider. A reputable provider will verify your insurance benefits before the assessment begins and provide a clear explanation of what is covered and what, if anything, you will be responsible for.

Does Medicaid Cover ABA Therapy?

Yes, both New Jersey and Missouri Medicaid programs cover ABA therapy for eligible children with autism. In New Jersey, NJ FamilyCare (the state’s Medicaid program) covers ABA services for children who qualify based on income and medical necessity. In Missouri, MO HealthNet covers ABA therapy for eligible children and does not have a set age limit for coverage.

Medicaid coverage typically means that eligible families pay little to nothing out of pocket for ABA therapy. If your child is currently on Medicaid or you think they may qualify, it is worth verifying with your ABA provider when you first reach out. Some families also have both Medicaid and a commercial insurance plan, which can result in even lower costs when both are billed appropriately.

What About Families Without Insurance Coverage?

If your child does not currently have insurance or your plan does not cover ABA therapy, you are not necessarily without options. Depending on your household income, your child may qualify for Medicaid in New Jersey or Missouri. Additionally, some ABA providers offer payment assistance or can help connect families with community resources and autism-specific funding programs.

If you are unsure about your coverage situation, the best first step is simply to reach out to a provider and describe your situation. A knowledgeable intake team will help you understand your options before you are asked to commit to anything.
